Maame Ekua Acquah, a 33-year-old PhD student a the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens at the University Ghana, has recently received a laptop donation from the Kiko Foundation. Maame is the recipient of the EMBL UNESCO Residency in Infection Biology, which supports African female scientists in accelerating their research on infectious diseases - diseases that are particularly widespread and impactful across the African continent. As part of this residency, Maame is spending three months at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), advancing her research to later implement it in her home country and institution.

Her research focuses on how certain human genes influence the severity of COVID-19, exploring the molecular interactions between gene variants and viral pathogens. The laptop is crucial to her work, as it enables her to carry out essential computational analysis and bioinformatics. Her multi-disciplinary approach spans bioinformatics, epidemiology, molecular biology, and immunology, addressing the complexities of COVID-19.

Grateful for the Kiko Foundation’s support, Maame expressed that the laptop donation was an unexpected but greatly appreciated gift that will significantly enhance her ability to further her important research.

Ihre Forschung konzentriert sich darauf, wie bestimmte menschliche Gene den Schweregrad von COVID-19 beeinflussen. Dabei untersucht sie die molekularen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Genvarianten und viralen Krankheitserregern.
